A budgeting app that works without a bank login
Most budgeting apps ask for your bank login on the first screen. CapKin never does. You say what you spent, it sorts it into your household’s shared caps — no bank connection, no aggregator, nothing to link.
What “no bank login” actually means here
When a budgeting app asks you to “connect your bank,” it routes you through an aggregator — Plaid, MX, or an open-banking provider — that holds an ongoing connection to your account and streams your transactions into the app. CapKin skips that step entirely. There is no aggregator, no bank OAuth screen, and no credentials to hand over. You enter what you spend yourself, so the app never touches your bank.
That one difference changes what the app can see and what it can ever leak. A budget that never connects to your bank has no bank-data connection to expose in the first place. We make the longer case for that trade-off in our guide to budgeting without linking your bank account — this page is about the app that does it.
How CapKin tracks spending without a bank connection
You log a purchase the moment it happens, in one sentence, by voice or text — “coffee 4.50, groceries 32, gas 40.” CapKin does the rest:
- Say or type what you spent in a single sentence, however many items.
- CapKin splits the line into items and proposes a category for each.
- You glance and confirm. Anything it isn’t sure of is flagged, never guessed silently.
- Your running totals update against the caps you set, so every category stays visible.
No login, no aggregator, no waiting for a transaction to post. You recorded it at the moment it happened, before it disappears into a feed.
A bank-linked app vs CapKin
Both approaches can keep a budget. Here is what you are actually choosing between:
| Typical bank-linked app | CapKin |
|---|---|
| Connect your bank through an aggregator | Sign up and start logging |
| Sees your full transaction history, ongoing | Sees only what you enter |
| Categories guessed from bank memos | A category proposed, you confirm each |
| Built around one account holder | Built around a shared household |
| Kids need a separate paid debit card, if at all | Capture-only role for kids, included |
| May move money or store card details | Tracking only — no money movement |
| Often a monthly subscription | Free during beta |
Why households choose a no-bank-login budget
A bank connection is built around one account holder. Real households aren’t. When the shared budget lives outside the bank, anyone in the household can add to the same picture without touching anyone’s banking.
Couples stop having the “did you log that?” conversation — either of you can add a purchase in seconds. And a teenager can record their own spending with capture-only access, so they learn where the money goes while a parent still approves what lands in the budget. That makes CapKin a genuine family budgeting app, not a single-user tool.
Your data stays yours
Because CapKin never connects to your bank, there are no bank credentials to store and no transaction feed to protect. Everything you enter is encrypted in transit and at rest, and each household’s data is isolated by household ID on every request. Voice audio is used only to produce a transcript and is deleted the moment transcription finishes — there is no audio kept in the database. Transcription and categorizing run on the OpenAI API on a tier that does not retain your content or train on it. You can export or delete your household’s data whenever you want.
Where CapKin isn’t the right fit
It’s only fair to say where CapKin won’t suit you, so you don’t sign up for the wrong thing:
- You want automatic imports. CapKin is manual by design. If typing or saying a sentence per purchase sounds like too much, a bank-linked app will suit you better.
- You want a debit card or to move money. CapKin does neither. It tracks spending against caps; it is not a payment or banking account.
- You need a native app. CapKin is an installable web app (PWA), not an App Store or Play Store download.
- You need a finished product today. CapKin is in beta, and some features are still being finalized.
Frequently asked questions
- Is there a budgeting app that doesn’t need a bank login?
- Yes. CapKin is a budgeting app that works entirely without a bank login — you enter spending yourself by voice or text, and it never connects to your bank or uses an aggregator like Plaid.
- How does CapKin track spending without connecting to my bank?
- You log each purchase in a sentence by voice or text. CapKin splits it into items, proposes a category for each, and updates your household totals against the caps you set — all from what you enter, with no bank feed.
- Is a budgeting app without a bank connection safe?
- A budget that never connects to your bank has no bank credentials to store and no transaction feed to expose. CapKin encrypts your data in transit and at rest and isolates each household’s data by household ID.
- Can my partner and kids use the same budget?
- Yes. CapKin is built for a shared household. A partner can be a full member, and a child or teenager can use a capture-only role that logs spending for a parent to approve before it counts toward the budget.
- Is CapKin free?
- CapKin is free during beta, with no card required to sign up. Paid plans have not been announced.
