Terms of Service
Effective date: July 22, 2026. These terms are a plain-language agreement between you and CapKin. By creating an account or using CapKin, you agree to them.
1. What CapKin is — and is not
CapKin is a shared household budgeting app. Your household sets spending caps, members log expenses by voice or text, and CapKin shows totals against those caps.
CapKin is not a financial account. It does not connect to banks, hold or move money, make payments, or import transactions. Nothing in CapKin is financial, investment, tax, or legal advice. The numbers in CapKin are the numbers your household entered.
2. Beta status
CapKin is in beta. Features may change, be added, or be removed, and occasional bugs or downtime are possible. CapKin is free during beta; paid plans have not been announced. If pricing is introduced, we will tell you in advance and you will be able to export your data and leave before being charged anything.
3. Your account
- You must provide accurate information and keep your sign-in credentials secure. You are responsible for activity under your account.
- You must be an adult (the age of majority where you live) to create an account.
- Accounts for children can only be created by a household owner, who confirms they are the child's parent or legal guardian and accepts these terms on the child's behalf.
4. Households and roles
A household has one owner, who controls the budget, membership, and child accounts, and can transfer ownership. Members manage their own entries. Child accounts are capture-only: their entries require the owner's approval. Role permissions are enforced server-side; using CapKin means accepting how these roles work.
5. Your data
Your household's data belongs to your household. You give us only the permission we need to operate the service — storing, processing, and displaying your data to your household, as described in the Privacy Policy. We claim no other rights to it. You can export your data and delete your account at any time.
6. Voice and AI features
Voice input is transcribed and parsed by AI, and AI-generated suggestions (such as expense categorization and kids' lessons) can be wrong. Nothing is saved until a member confirms it, and you are responsible for reviewing entries before confirming. Raw audio is deleted immediately after transcription, as described in the Privacy Policy.
7. Acceptable use
Don't misuse CapKin. In particular, don't: attempt to access other households' data; probe, overload, or disrupt the service; reverse-engineer it; use it for anything unlawful; or upload content that is illegal or harmful. We may suspend or close accounts that do.
8. Intellectual property
CapKin's software, design, name, and branding are ours. These terms give you a personal, non-transferable right to use the app; they don't transfer any ownership in it.
9. Ending things
You can stop using CapKin and delete your household at any time. We can suspend or terminate accounts that break these terms. If we ever discontinue the service, we will give reasonable notice so you can export your data.
10. Disclaimers
CapKin is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied — including fitness for a particular purpose and accuracy of AI-generated content. Budget decisions you make based on CapKin are your own.
11. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, CapKin is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages, or for loss of data or profits, arising from your use of the service. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim — which, during the free beta, is zero.
12. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. For meaningful changes we will notify you in the app before they take effect; continuing to use CapKin after that means you accept the updated terms.
